I have problems installing a few new themes and plugins due to my Wordpress version. I started blogging on a Wordpress 2.1.1. This is considered an ancient script. Lol…
I never though it was easy until I tried it. After reading the steps from Wordpress website that is. It was easy as 1, 2, 3. Really!
The Three Step Upgrade
IMPORTANT: Please read the instructions properly in order to have a safe upgrade. Make sure that you have backup. The upgrade from this post is most probably suited for those who has experience with php and html.
Step 1: Replace Wordpress files
Download the latest Wordpress. Login to your ftp and delete your old wp-includes and wp-admin directories. Copy the new Wordpress files overwriting old files. You may want to keep the wp-content folder because it contains plugins and themes folder. You should copy over the content to these folders, not the entire folder.
Do take special attention to preserve the content of wp-config.php file in the root directory. The file contains current settings for your existing installation. Compare your existing file with the new installation file wp-config-sample.php. You could either copy the new statement from the sample file to your current file or transfer your settings to the sample file and save it as wp-config.php replacing your current file.
Step 2: Upgrade your installation
Go to your blog admin login page. Wordpress will detect if database upgrade is necessary at which point you will be directed to Database Upgrade page and follow the instructions. Wordpress will update your database to be compatible with the latest code. You blog may look funny if you don’t do this step.
Step 3: Tap yourself on the shoulder and have a cuppa
Your Wordpress installation is successfully upgraded. You may want to clear your cache if you have caching enabled. And you’re now considered and upgraded blogger. Lol…
For troubleshooting please see here. That page also has information about some of the most common problems we see.
I hope you find this tutorial useful. Good luck with your installation. Cheers!
